  • Overview

    The MDS Coordinator – Medical Coder serves as a resource person in geriatric nursing. Responsible for completing Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) process according to regulatory guidelines. Supports QAPI process. Demonstrates leadership abilities in clinical and professional roles.  The Coordinator demonstrates positive guest relations through effective communication skills, patient advocacy and maintaining collaborative relationships.  Contributes to standards of care, supports department policies and identifies quality improvement opportunities. Assigns ICD codes in an accurate, prioritized manner for medical diagnoses, and oversees the assignment of treatment diagnosis.

    Embodies the Culture of Safety.  Adheres to all patient and staff safety policies and procedures. Reports all unsafe or potentially unsafe patient or staff conditions immediately

    Responsibilities

    • Leads all aspects of the RAI process. Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements related to the process.
    • Functions as nursing representative to the interdisciplinary team.
    • Completes the MDS, CAAs and CATs in a timely manner. Completes the tracking forms, discharge forms, etc., and corrects submitted MDS’s if necessary.
    • Understands the RUGS groups and the impact of PPS. Advises the facility with regard to the best RUGS group for residents. Provides RUGS data to the Business Office Manager for correct billing
    • Assists the Case Mix Review Quality Assurance person during quarterly visits.
    • Attends state and/or federal educational programs related to the RAI process and PPS.
    • Communicates with relevant therapy personnel to produce a consistent plan and implementation of the plan.
    • Reviews all new admissions and assigns appropriate and accurate ICD codes to current medical diagnosis; and oversees the assignment of treatment diagnosis.
    • Keeps Manager informed of all issues and problems related to the RAI process.

    Qualifications

    • Licensed Registered Nurse
    • Experience with Geriatrics and Long Term Care
    • Familiarity with third-party reimbursement regulations
    • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
    • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
    • Certification for Medical Coding
