  • Overview

    The extern program is a twelve-week summer position whereby the extern works under the direct supervision of a registered professional nurse. The extern assists with patient care and is able to observe the planning, implementing, and evaluating of nursing care to meet the spiritual, emotional, and physiological needs of the patient. The extern will be expected to assume a flexible schedule including every other weekend. The extern will have the opportunity to apply for per diem status after the successful completion of the summer program. The extern will have done clinicals at Mid Coast Hospital.


    • Carries out therapeutic measures under the supervision of a professional nurse and within the scope of the extern skills list.
    • Implements the plan of care within the scope of practice.
    • Evaluates care given.
    • Demonstrates the ability to give safe care to effectively meet the needs of the patient.
    • Demonstrates knowledge and judgement needed to meet the needs of the patient.
    • Provides physical care to patients.
    • Maintains a therapeutic, physical and emotional patient environment.
    • Assist with patient activity.
    • Assists with nutrition and elimination, and documents appropriately.
    • Recognizes symptoms and changes in patients’ condition and reports these to the responsible nurse.


    • Currently enrolled in a BSN nursing program
    • Successful completion of all sophomore level nursing courses
    • Maine CNA certification and listed as “active” on the registry
    • Letter of recommendation from a clinical instructor
    • Documentation of Basic Life Support Certification
    • Completed Mid Coast Health Services application
    • Completed a clinical rotation at Mid Coast Hospital
