The Outpatient Addictions Specialist is responsible for evaluating, assessing and ensuring treatment for persons who present with substance-related problems, abuse, or dependence, with or without co-occurring mental health problems.  Additionally, these same services are provided to family members or concerned persons for effects of substance misuse problems upon them.  These duties include providing evaluation and treatment recommendations; referring to appropriate services; and providing education and counseling to clients, family members, and affected others.  Evaluation and treatment may occur within any Division of Behavioral Health Program. 


Assigned primarily to the Addiction Resource Center, but may provide coverage in Partial Hospitalization and/or Senior Mental Health programs for persons with co-occurring substance use, mental health, and geriatric issues.


  • Conduct assessment interviews, gather appropriate information, and synthesize into a clinical summary and recommendation for appropriate clinical services.
  • Provide treatment planning, education and effective clinical interventions in individual, family, and/or group modalities.
  • Meet productivity level established by Mid Coast Hospital and the Office of Substance Abuse (OSA).
  • Facilitate inter-program transitions throughout the Division of Behavioral Health for persons with co-occurring illness.
  • Complete clinical record requirements in an accurate and timely manner as required by appropriate regulatory and review agencies.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with referral sources.
  • Abide by Federal Confidentiality and HIPAA Regulations.
  • Attend and participate in regularly scheduled clinical and staff meetings, individual and group supervision, and any other meeting deemed necessary by the Manager of Outpatient Behavioral Health.
  • Continue professional development through the use of supervision, in-service training, and professional training resources outside of Mid Coast Hospital.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or developed.


  • Masters Degree in counseling, psychology or social work, with special training in child and adolescent development.
  • License in social work or counseling.
  • Previous work experience in counseling children, adolescents and adults dealing with substance-related problems with co-occurring disorders.
  • If in recovery, two years of prior sobriety at time of hire.
