Overview

  • The nurse manager position at Mid Coast Hospital is a key leadership and management position within the organization.
  • The nurse manager provides direction for the overall growth and development of the department incorporating the objectives, policies and procedures of the nursing department and Mid Coast Health Services.
  • The nurse manager is responsible for effective leadership, assuring clinical excellence, promoting teamwork and collaboration, supporting professional development and managing the business of their respective units.
  • The nurse manager is a registered nurse with 24-hour/7-day accountability for the supervision of all registered nurses and other healthcare providers who deliver nursing care in an inpatient or outpatient area. The nurse manager is typically responsible for recruitment and retention, performance review and professional development. In collaboration with the nurse director, is involved in the budget formulation process and quality outcomes; and helps plan for, organize and lead the delivery of nursing care for a designated patient care area.  

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

 

Human Resources

  • Assists with interview and hiring processes
  • Monitors staff attendance policy
  • Participates in direct care nurse performance evaluation and peer review processes
  • Oversees compliance with license and certification of the unit’s staff
  • Participates in performance management processes of nurse directors.

 Professional Practice

  • Participates and facilitates professional practice council activities on their unit
  • Participates in Magnet steering committee and initiatives pertinent to their scope of practice.

 Budget

  • Evaluates and oversees staffing levels to current patient acuity and census needs
  • Manages AMS productivity data- daily entering
  • Manages schedule to budgeted core staffing
  • Completes payroll variances for each pay period

 Daily Work- 50% of time spent on unit with staff and patients

  • Performs purposeful leadership rounds
  • Participates in patient care conferences
  • Participates in new product or service evaluation and implementation activites
  • Manages Midas variances
  • Participates in complaint management, provides timely service recovery to patients, family and staff.
  • Liaison to ancillary staff/units as needed
  • Participates and performs quality audits- observation and chart reviews
  • Attends meetings as assigned by nurse director

Qualifications

  • Current nursing registration in the State of Maine.
  • A Bachelors of Science in Nursing or higher degree and national specialty nursing certification is required.
  • ACLS, PALS, BLS certifications
  • 35 CNE or contact hours obtained annually in a combination of leadership and clinical education.
  • Behavioral Health experience required
  • Supervisory experience preferred
