  • Overview

    Provides technical and clerical support in all major areas of the laboratory while ensuring efficient operations and promoting positive staff and customer relations.   Must possess a level of technical competence that allows for the proper resolution of a variety of problems related to patient samples, quality control data or instrumentation.

    Responsibilities

    Technical:

    • After an appropriate orientation period, is able to function with minimal or no supervision in the following areas of the laboratory:
    • Is familiar with the contents of procedure manuals in all the areas they may be assigned to work in.                

    Blood Bank:

    • Performs basic pre-transfusion testing, problem solving, component preparation and issue.
    • Adheres to all AABB standards
    • Be aware of supply of blood and blood products supplies and orders more as necessary.

    Hematology:

    • Operate and maintain the automated cell counting instrument.
    • Prepare and process all patient samples for routine and special hematology procedures.
    • Process all samples for miscellaneous cell counts (i.e., pleural, synovial, CSF).
    • Perform coagulation studies on patient samples.
    • Operate and maintain coagulation analyzer.

    Chemistry:

    • Prepare and process all patient specimens for a variety of assays, including routine chemistry and therapeutic drug monitoring.
    • Operate and maintain all equipment (automated and semi-automated) in use in the Chemistry Lab.
    • Must be able to recognize bizarre patient values and take all appropriate corrective action steps before reporting results.

    Quality Control:

    • Understand and operate within the guidelines of the Laboratory’s Quality Control Program.
    • Properly evaluate and record Q.C. data in a timely manner.
    • Take all appropriate steps when QC is not in range; maintain appropriate documentation of all steps taken in the Corrective Action Log
    • Working with the appropriate Lead Tech, logically resolve Q.C. problems.

    Results Reporting:

    • Properly interpret normal and abnormal lab results and process all data in an appropriate and timely fashion, using the LIS system.
    • Understand and properly complete all required paper work in a timely fashion: patient logs, quality control records, preventative maintenance records, charge reports and any other specific reports in a particular area.   

    Instrumentation:

    • Understand and properly operate the hospital-wide computerized order entry system.
    • Perform basic trouble shooting on equipment, attempting to resolve instrument problems through contact with the manufacturer’s technical support services; document all steps taken in the Corrective Action Log.
    • Maintain appropriate preventative maintenance records.
    • Defer to the Lead Tech when a problem cannot be resolved and all appropriate preliminary steps have been taken.

    Phlebotomy:

    • Is prepared to function in this area to meet both inpatient and outpatient needs.
    • Exhibit professional and pleasant behavior at all times.
    • Use discretion and tact in all interactions with patients.
    • Acquire and demonstrate good phlebotomy skills.
    • Follow Standard Precautions when appropriate.

     

    Qualifications

    • Associates degree in Medical Technology with MLT (ASCP) or equivalent Certification.
    • Eligible for promotion to MT II with 6 years of progressively responsible relevant experience (minimum of 1 year at Mid Coast Health Services with a minimum of “Meets Standards” performance appraisal). Exceptions to this promotion policy must be approved by Laboratory Manager and Human Resource Manager.
