  • Overview

    Provides clinical support to the Pulmonary providers to assist with patient care in the MCMG Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine practice.

     

    Responsibilities

    • Provides support to the Pulmonary Providers: rooming patients, gathering intake information, obtaining specimens, performing medication reconciliation, managing phone calls/prescription refills, scheduling, processing orders, etc.
    • Assesses patients; obtains vital signs, document and report.
    • Spirometery – demonstrated ability to perform spirometery including use of bronchodialators according to established procedures
    • Serves as a resource to other staff members for any clinical questions
    • Performs 6 minute walk tests
    • Serves as liaison for the sleep apnea screening program
    • Oximetry – ability to monitor patients by oximetery according to established guidelines/protocols. A thorough understanding of applications, limitations and patient assessment is necessary.
    • Stays current with changes in PFT and is able to independently perform the dilution lung volume determinations, diffusion capacity utilizing carbon monoxide, flow volume, loops and maximum voluntary ventilation using Collins GS II.       Accuracy of tests, machine calibration and troubleshooting and a thorough understanding of the various pathologies being evaluated along with excellent patient education/interaction skills are included in this area.
    • Performs oxygen therapy; familiar with standing order, assembles equipment, assess patient, document.     
    • Tobacco Treatment Specialist advising and treating patients independently on physician order.
    • Serves as Lung Cancer Screening Specialist advising and treating patients independently on physician order
    • Oxygen Therapy – all aspects of O2 delivery devices - cannulas, masks, hoods, tents, aerosols, according to established departmental policy/procedure.       This includes order review, patient education, O2 rounds and documentation.
    • Bronchoscopy Assist – able to assist pulmonologist in digital bronchoscopy procedures.       This is inclusive of patient education and preparation, topical anesthesia, proper handling and use of cytology brushes, microbiology brushes, biopsy forceps, wang needles, occlusion balloon catheters, proper handling, labeling and transport of specimens, ordering and documentation of procedure.
    • Suctioning – ability to suction patient via natural or artificial airway. A thorough knowledge of risks, universal precautions, asepsis and indications is expected.
    • Homecare Referrals – must possess well-developed skills in educating patients and families in home oxygen and DME equipment. Thorough knowledge of Medicare and various insurance company guidelines.
    • CPAP/BIPAP – demonstrates ability to initiate, fit equipment, check orders and document according to policy and procedure. The Level II Therapist is also able to interact and advise physicians and nurses on indicators and efficacy as well as educate family and patient in this procedure.
    • Promote the department by offering services in a cooperative manner.
    • Develop a positive atmosphere that encourages patient and physician utilization of services.
    • Maintain daily a clean and organized work environment.
    • Request departmental supplies as needed.
    • Ensure equipment is in good repair.
    • Maintain knowledge in new techniques by attending educational sessions.
    • Customer Service – All staff are expected to develop and maintain excellence in customer service. This includes developing a positive attitude that facilitates growth within the department and encourages physician utilization of services.
    • Work politely and cooperatively with other staff to promote the teamwork necessary for a productive and harmonious work environment.
    • Responsible for other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    1. Education:
      1. Graduate from an approved Respiratory Therapy Program
    2. Experience:
      1. Because of the size of the institution(s), very little back up support may be available. Consequently, a candidate with 2-3 years experience is preferred.
    3. Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations:
      1. RRT, a member of the AARC/AACVPR.
      2. C CPT or R CPT highly desired
      3. ACLS certification required
